On January 23, the PinchukArtCentre will Open solo Exhibitions of Indian Subodh Gupta and Ukrainian Sergey Bratkov

Two parallel exhibitions of the internationally renowned artists - the Indian Subodh Gupta and Ukrainian Sergey Bratkov - will open on 23 January 2010 at the PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv, Ukraine. Both projects are dedicated to the shifts taking place in the national cultures in the context of the modern world's life. New artworks have been created specially for these projects and are intended for an exclusive showcase at the PinchukArtCentre. The exhibitions will be on display until 21 March 2010.

Faith Matters is Subodh Gupta's first major solo show in Eastern Europe. For this exhibition, Gupta has created four new sculptures and a series of nine new paintings. With these new works, Gupta focuses on the shifting of national identity and cultural change.

Sergey Bratkov's project, Ukraine, is his first major solo exhibition in Ukraine. For this show, Bratkov has created series of new photographs and temporary sculptures. This will be presented along with never seen works made in the past ten years, highlighting the different stages of his oeuvre.

Presenting these projects, the PinchukArtCentre continues its work aimed at opening the Ukrainian art for the world and revealing the finest examples of the international art to the Ukrainian public by means of bridging the national identity and global challenge.

Subodh Gupta was born in 1964 in Khagaul, Bihar, India. He studied at the College of Art, Patna (1983 - 1988) before moving to New Delhi where he currently lives and works. Trained as a painter, he went on to experiment with a variety of media, which culminated in his first installation in 1996 entitled ‘29 Mornings'. His work has been prominent in major international biennials and has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions across Asia, Europe and America.

Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1960, the artist lives and works in Moscow. Bratkov's work is heavily influenced by his Kharkiv origin. In 2002, he took part in the 25th Contemporary Art Biennale in São Paolo. In 2007, he was represented in the Ukrainian pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale as part of the project "Poem About An Inland Sea" organized by the PinchukArtCentre. His solo exhibitions include Faust and Margherita, Center for Contemporary Art, Kiev, 2003; S.M.A.K., Ghent, 2005; Part of my Life, Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, 2006; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, 2007; Glory Days, Fotomuseum, Winterthur, 2008 and Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, Spain, 2009.
