Victor Pinchuk Foundation has provided Cradles of Hope Centre in Lviv with Newborn Hearing Screener

As part of equipping the Cradles of Hope partner centre on the base of the Lviv Oblast Clinic Perinatal Centre, the Victor Pinchuk Foundation has provided its newborn intensive care unit with a portable device for newborn audiologic screening, Resonance R140 (Bettertone, Italy), worth UAH125,000.

An important issue among the many complications and diseases that preterm babies suffer from because of their organs being underdeveloped is the hearing function disorder. This is the category of patients who are exposed to the highest risk of deafness development, and therefore, it is important to avoid wasting the precious time, and to identify and correct the disorder as early as possible. Under the national equipping standard, a hearing function screener must be available at all newborn intensive care units. However, only few perinatal centres and maternity homes have a possibility of providing the audiologic screening. Since now on, the Lviv Oblast Perinatal Centre is among such facilities.

The Lviv Oblast Clinic Perinatal Centre was built and launched in 1986 as the City Maternity Home, and in 1990, it was reorganized into the first perinatal centre in Ukraine. This was one of the major medical maternal and child health care establishments in the Lviv Oblast hosting every year 35000 to 4000 deliveries and about 4800 operations, with more than 400 newborns receiving emergency medical aid at its intensive care unit. In October 2013, the functioning of the centre was suspended and its reconstruction started. Almost 5 years after the start of the construction and refurbishment works, the doors of the perinatal centre opened again for the Lviv Oblast women.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation has also contributed to the equipping of the upgraded region’s perinatal centre by opening on its base its 34th Cradles of Hope partnering neonatal centre and by providing its newborn intensive care unit with medical equipment for treatment and nursing of preterm babies, worth UAH 6.49 million.

Over the period of cooperation with the Lviv Oblast Clinic Perinatal Centre under the Cradles of Hope project (6 months in 2018), 2283 infants have been born at the centre, and 281 babies have been treated in the newborn intensive care unit (including 39 newborns weighing less than 1 kg at birth). According to the centre specialists, out of the 266 babies whose lives were saved, 140 got saved thanks to the equipment received from the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.
