Elena Pinchuk Foundation and Victor Pinchuk Foundation, in partnership with Ministry of Health and UNICEF, have developed respiratory therapy online course for doctors

Due to the coronavirus spread in Ukraine, especially topical are not only the issues related to equipping medical facilities with the necessary devices. Essential is the professional information support for doctors who are on the forefront of battle against COVID-19 today. 

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Elena Pinchuk and the Victor Pinchuk Foundations have developed the “Respiratory Therapy Online Course”. It will be useful for anaesthesiologists, resuscitators and nurses working at intensive care units and doctors and nurses of other sections of medical facilities and health managers involved in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Earlier, the Elena Pinchuk foundation and the Victor Pinchuk Foundation provided Ukrainian hospitals with 10 artificial lung ventilation (ALV) devices. Overall, the Foundations of Elena Pinchuk and Victor Pinchuk and their companies INTERPIPE and EastOne have funded more than UAH 114 million to fight the coronavirus as of today.

Maksym Stepanov, Minister of Health of Ukraine: “Today, our doctors are on the forefront of the battle against the new coronavirus. To make them come out winners, we are working to provide them with conditions for effective work. We have increased healthcare workers’ wages, we are consistently providing them with individual protective means, and we have adopted the unified state treatment protocol for COVID-19 infected patients. It is essential that all medical workers not only know all the algorithms of treatment, but also know how to apply it in practice. This is why such an online training is really opportune in a situation of quarantine and prevention of the infection spread.”

Specifically, the video blocks explain the elements of the artificial lung ventilation machines and their maintenance, the devices’ default settings and fine-tuning for a specific patient, tactics of ventilation, importance of humidification of the breathing gas during the ALV etc. The video course is available at the link: https://tinyurl.com/uf7mnbz

Svitlana Gavrylenko, head of health programmes at the Victor Pinchuk Foundation: “The goal of creating this training video product is to provide resuscitation and intensive care units’ professionals with a simple, clear and comprehensive action plan for provision of breath support for patients, using the artificial lung ventilation devices. We hope that the video training will be useful for our doctors and will enable them to feel more confident when carrying out ventilation for the patients with severe COVID-19 cases.” 

In the nearest weeks, the course will be complemented with new chapters meeting requests from medical workers active in fighting the coronavirus epidemic, and especially those who are involved in respiratory therapy.

In addition to the purchases of protection means for the health workers and medical equipment, we believe that it is important to improve the doctors’ knowledge on respiratory therapy. Since it is now the major help for patients with pneumonia provoked by the coronavirus infection. This is why we have engaged our best professionals to create this training course.”

The instructors in the first part of the course are Igor Malysh, head of all-purpose intensive care unit at the Kyiv Ambulance Clinic Hospital, professor at the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Department, P.L. Shupik National Medical Academy for Postgraduate Education, master grade anaesthesiologist, State Award in Science and Technology laureate, Doctor of Medicine; Lesia Zgrzheblovska, chief attending physician at all-purpose intensive care unit at the Kyiv Ambulance Clinic Hospital, professor at the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Department, P.L. Shupik National Medical Academy for Postgraduate Education, Doctor of Medicine; Iryna Kondratova, deputy director general of the Kharkiv Oblast Clinic Hospital, head of the regional perinatal centre, Doctor of Medicine, senior lecturer at Paediatrics and Neonatology Department 1, Kharkiv National medical University; Volodymyr Mitin, expert on medical equipment, official representative of VYAIRE MEDICAL INC., the ALV machines manufacturer.
