Challenges for philanthropy in Ukraine: The welfare/ policy dichotomy

Two events this year have significantly influenced the understanding of charity's role in Ukraine. The first was the Philanthropic Roundtable held by the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation at the World Economic Forum in Davos. It was the first philanthropy-related event to be hosted there by Ukraine and featured prominent speakers such as George Soros, Dr Tadataka Yamada, Global Health Program President at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Ukraine's First Lady, Kateryna Yushchenko, Chair of the Ukraine 3000 Foundation, and Robert Harrison, the Clinton Global Initiative's CEO. The second event was the conference 'Development of charity in Ukraine: from positive practices to favourable legislation' held by the Ukrainian Philanthropists Forum (UPF). This brought together a record number (over 80) of CEOs of active private and corporate foundations in Ukraine. They engaged in a heated debate on various topics. The Victor Pinchuk Foundation has covered the cost of repair of the gas analyser for the Cradles of Hope partner centre in Rivne

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation has funded UAH 52 076 the newborn intensive care unit of the Rivne Oblast Perinatal Centre as part of technical support for the Cradles of Hope partner centres.

The “BDayVyklyk: first breath” project has handed an infant breath resuscitator to the Kirovograd Oblast Hospital Perinatal Centre

Under the charity project “BDayVyklyk: first breath” initiated by Ukrainian Kateryna Sadova with support of the Ukrainian Philanthropic Marketplace, the seventh infant breath resuscitator NeoPuff TM RD-900 has been purchased for the Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s Cradles of Hope partner centre operating on the base of the Kirovograd Oblast Hospital Perinatal Centre.

More than 400 Ukrainian students, scholars, opinion-makers, and security issues experts as well as the recipients of Zavtra.UA and WorldWideStudies scholarship programs of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation took part in the event.
