Winners of Zavtra.UA scholarship programme implement the “Nature Reserve” project at the Gomolsha Forests National Park in Kharkiv region.

From 21 to 31 July 2009, under the “Nature Reserve - 2009” project, the winners of the Zavtra.UA scholarship programme initiated by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation will put the above project into practice in the Gomolsha Forests National Park of Kharkiv region.

The project participants will carry out a sociological and educational survey in order to establish the level of awareness of the local population and holiday makers about the National Park and other features of the natural reserve fund. They will also enlighten people about the issues the National Park is dealing with. Additionally, the scholarship winners will take part in setting up an eco-path “Bulgarian-Alan Settlement”, assist scientists to find and register certain types of plants and rid the Park from litter.

Gomolsha Forests consists of several vast woodland areas located on the banks of the Siverskii Donets’ and along the Gomolsha rivers. Together they create one of the largest upland groves in Kharkiv region. The mission of the National Park, which is included into the top protection category of the nature reserve areas, is to save this unique natural treasure. Apart from this, there are a number of features of historical importance scattered on the Park’s territory, such as the remnants of Zmiiv Cossacks’ Monastery, the last shelter for Cossacks in Ukraine.
