Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman to analyze future of market economy and democracy at the 8th Yalta Annual Meeting

The world’s preeminent economist and publicist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics 2008 Paul Krugman will appear at the 8th Annual Meeting of Yalta European Strategy (YES) with his special speech entitled “The Future of Western Democracy and Market Economy”. The speech will be delivered in the evening of the first conference day – Friday, September 16.

Paul Krugman belongs to the circle of the world’s most renowned economic analysts. He authored a number of theoretic works on economic geography and international economic relations. To the wider public Paul Krugman is better known as an op-ed columnist The New York Times. In 2008, Krugman won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for analyzing economic models of international trade and problems of economic geography. He belongs to the harshest critics of economic policy of the George Bush Jr. republican administration.

In his most recent statements Paul Krugman predicts deepening of the global economic crisis and constantly growing risk of global recession.

Current state and future perspective for the global economy will be one of the key topics at the 8th Yalta Annual Meeting. In particular, these issues will be discussed during the session “The Global Economy – What Went Wrong and How to Right It?” featuring former Barak Obama’s economic advisor Lawrence Summers, Member of the Deutsche Bank Executive Committee Jurgen Fitschen, First Deputy Head of Presidential Administration of Ukraine Iryna Akimova, andformer Minister of Industry, Energy and Environment of India Suresh P. Prabhu.

Economic potential and prospects for development of Turkey and Ukraine will be debated at a separate session to be joined by Minister for European Affairs and Chief Negotiator of Turkey Egemen Bagis, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Boris Kolesnikov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt, Head of the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko andSenior Fellow of Peterson Institute for International Economics Anders Aslund.

The 8th Yalta Annual Meeting entitled “Ukraine and the World: Common Challenges, Common Future”, organized by the Yalta European Strategy (YES) in partnership with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, will take place in Livadia Palace, Ukraine from 15th to 18th of September 2011.

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and President of Israel Shimon Peres will open the Annual Meeting on September 16.

The 9th Mental Health Center of the Nationwide RETURNING Network Opens in Kyiv

The ninth mental health center of the nationwide RETURNING (ukr. ПОВЕРНЕННЯ) network has opened in Kyiv. The RETURNING project was founded by Victor Pinchuk and Olena Pinchuk to support the mental health of Ukraine’s service members, veterans, and their family members who have experienced the psychological consequences of the war caused by Russia’s aggression.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation paid for equipment repairs and purchased components for the neonatal intensive care units of five partner centres of Cradle of Hope based at the Chernihiv City Maternity Hospital, Poltava City Children's Clinical Hospital, Kherson Regional Children's Clinical Hospital, Lviv and Rivne Regional Perinatal Centres, at a total cost of UAH 768,000.
